Flutter Away

A short nature exploration game set in a cozy nook of the Amazon rainforest. Players spend five days as a butterfly researcher escaping the city: exploring trails, taking photos, and journaling discoveries.

My Role

Originally a VR title, I was brought on to design the UI for a Switch and Steam port. This meant creating a HUD for the game, as well as ensuring all the interactions felt good on controllers + with mouse and keyboard.

UI Design

The UI Design work in Flutter Away is minimal and light touch. The game is focused on the environment and letting the players explore + photograph butterflies and animals. This meant that the UI was primarily to highlight what the player can do and when.

Some of the UI from the VR version of the game was diegetic and still usable. We wanted to maintain the physicality of the journal and camera to make the player still feel in the world and like their actions achieved something and give these two actions weight.

Wireframing focused on where to place elements on the HUD to draw attention to important elements, and allow non-important, informational elements to blend in.
